Guyana’s pair of Raynauth Jeffrey and Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams placed 30th and 38th respectively in the Commonwealth Games men’s cycling time trial, yesterday.
England’s Alex Dowsett (47:41.78) dug deep late on to win gold, the 25-year-old was 5.92 seconds down on Rohan Dennis (47:51.08) after the middle section of the 38.4km course but had a strong last section to win by 9.30 from the Australian. Wales’ Geraint Thomas (47:55.82) won bronze, 14.04 behind Dowsett.
Twenty-year-old Jeffrey completed the course in 58 minutes 27.76 seconds with the 27 year-old Williams timed at 59 minutes 19.97. Fifty-eight riders took part.
Earlier in the female race, Guyana’s Claire Fraser-Green placed 29 of 31 starters in 53:02.61. The gold medal went to Linda Villumsen of New Zealand 42:25.46. Emma Pooley (42:31.49) of England settled for the silver with bronze going to Katrin Garfoot (43:13.91) of Australia. Sunday is the Road Race.
