Leeward Islands, who trailed leaders Guyana by 1.3 points, headed into the third and final round of the 2014 Regional under-19 three-day cricket tournament at the Enmore ground on the East Coast of Demerara with their hopes alive.
The aim of the Islanders was to win their first title since they took the 2001 championship in Guyana and by the close of the first day’s play they were 240-6 from 90 overs, already with four batting points after being 209-5 after their first 75 overs.
Ross Powell, who scored a century in the first round at the Stadium against Guyana, fell for 19 yesterday but Kasey Carty, son of St Martin’s Radio Cricket Commentator and Calypso singer Keith Carty, stroked the competition’s fourth century with an accomplished 114.
He got good support from Anguillan Ashram Hodge who was dismissed two short of a well deserved half century to leave the Leewards, the only team to score a 300 plus total in the competition, well placed to press home their advantage today.
Skipper Jousha Drakes picked up 3-66 for the Bajans. Play on the second day today is scheduled to start at 10:00hrs.
