A lone gunman shot a female minibus passenger in the stomach and reportedly stripped her of jewellery during a brazen robbery in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, at around 20.00 hrs last night.
Bernadette Campbell, 40, of Lot 60 West Road, Plaisance, was attacked by the gunman, who had posed as a passenger, shortly after the vehicle stopped on the Plaisance ‘Line Top.’
Dexter Carr, 20, who was sitting next to Campbell, sustained minor injuries when one of the bullets grazed his side.
Campbell, who was rushed from the scene, was still receiving emergency surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) at press time.
According to reports, Campbell and Carr were sitting in the front seat of the bus when the woman looked around and observed a male passenger behind her acting in a suspicious manner. The vehicle then headed to the Plaisance ‘Line Top’, where passengers began to disembark.
Kaieteur News understands that the ‘suspicious looking’ passenger exited the vehicle and pointed a handgun at Campbell and Carr, and ordered them to disembark. He then discharged about three shots, hitting Campbell in the stomach and grazing Carr.
The gunman reportedly then relieved the injured woman of her jewellery before fleeing.
Kaieteur News was told that Carr travelled to UG Road, Turkeyen, when he contacted a friend and informed him that he had been shot. The friend then took Carr to the GPHC.
Kaieteur News understands that Campbell’s father had to be treated at the GPHC after seeing his injured daughter.
