A wonderful 101 from opener Amir Jangoo, who shared in a magnificent 139-run stand with Brian Christmas, who stroked 66, was the highlight of the final day of the second round cricket match between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago which ended in a draw at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.
Scores: B’dos (185 & 103-4) T&T (199 & 239-9 dec)
Jangoo, who reached the boundary nine times in his innings, joined Nevisian Ross Powell of the Leewards and Guyana’s Shemron Hetmyer as the batsmen with centuries in the 2014 tournament.
The final day dawned with Jangoo on 44 and wicketkeeper Christmas on 30 with T&T on 77-1 in their second innings for an overall lead of 91.
The pair, who joined forces when West Indies under-19 left-hander Jeremy Solozano was trapped LBW for a duck by Chad Williams on Sunday, batted brilliantly on a low and slow track before Christmas was caught by Skipper Joshua Drakes, the son of ex Test pacer Vasbert Drakes as off-spinner, Guyanese born Neil Persaud made the breakthrough.
Jangoo and Camillo Carimbocas, who made 29, took the score to 194 before the next seven wickets fell for 35 runs as none of the remaining batsmen reached 15 on a day on which the declining standard of the Region’s teenage batsmen was exposed.
Spinner Williams took 4-77 from 33.4 overs for the Bajans who were set 254 for an improbable victory.
Led by a solid 41 from Akil Greenidge and 37 from Drakes, Barbados who last won a three-day title at this level at home in 2012, reached 103-4 from 37.2 overs when play was called off.
Dikembe Wilson (8) had his stumps knocked out by Samuel Roopnarine at 11-1 before Lee-Germon Gaskin (10) edged a catch to the keeper off Anderson Phillip to leave the boys from Bim on 26-2.
Greenidge and Drakes put together 65 for the third wicket before Roopnarine, who had 2-43, trapped Greenidge LBW at 91-3 before Drakes fell 12 runs later at 16:50hrs at which time the match was called off.
Barbados face the Leewards in the final round game from Wednesday at Enmore while Trinidad & Tobago, whose last title was in St Lucia in 2010, come up against host Guyana at Bourda. Both matches are scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs.
After two rounds, Guyana lead the points table with 26.3 followed by the Leewards 25.6. The Windwards on 21.9 points, Jamaica on 20.8, Barbados on 12 and T&T on 9.6 follow in that order. (Sean Devers)
