Statistician Charwayne Walker takes a look back at the first time Guyana won the regional U-19 cricket title, even as the tournament this year starts today.
Although it was called the Under-21 Regional Youth Cricket, the 1968 B.A.T Championship hosted by Barbados is Guyana’s first Regional Youth Cricket title. Playing under the Captaincy of Queen’s College’s Keith Aaron and managed by Hugh Dyer, the land of the Majestic Kaieteur Falls finished the B.A.T Championship with 20 points courtesy of an outright victory over Trinidad & Tobago, first Innings points against Barbados and although they lost on first Innings to Jamaican, the Land of Many waters were the inaugural Regional Youth Champs.
There were four centurions in the tournament, the first was 15 years old Barbadian Winslow Asby who stroked a magnificent 104 against Guyana. The other three-figure men were Trinidadian Richard De Souza 146 vs Barbados and Jamaican Samuel Morgan and Lawrence Rowe who both put Guyana to the sword with 126 and 102 respectively. Jamaican Lyndel Wright was the tournament’s leading bowler with 21 wickets.
