Sunil Narine showed why he is undisputedly the top T20 bowler in the world with a magical one over spell to see the Guyana Amazon Warriors home after their Limacol CPL match against the Red Steel had ended in a sensational Tie at the Guyana National Stadium last night.
Narine spun webs around Nicolas Pooran who missed four balls before hitting the fifth for a catch to long-off with the Red Steel needing 12 to win the super over in front of a near capacity flag waving crowd.
Narine’s mesmerizing spell ended with a perfect dosra to Ross Taylor which he also missed as the CPL’s most economical bowler conceded not a single run after Chris Barnwell had disdainfully pulled Kevin Copper for six off the first ball when the Guyana Amazon Warriors batted.
But Barnwell, who made nine, was run out off the fourth ball going for an impossible second run while Jimmy Neesham missed the last two delivers to leave the contest wide open after a horrendous fielding display had gifted the ‘Warriors the Tie.
This was after the Warriors, who lost too many wickets at crucial stages, benefitted from a skied offering off the last ball from Ronsford Beaton when the Guyana based team replied to the paltry 118-8 made by the Red Steel, and wicket-keeper Pooran shockingly dropped the sitter with three required to win.
Lindl Simmons hit a 25-ball 32 with three fours and a six at the top of the order but only Barnwell, with a fighting 37 from 40 balls, and Narine (16) of the remaining batsmen got into double figures on a slow, low pitch which made free scoring a tedious task although the outfield was lightening fast despite the recent rain on the East Bank of Demerara.
When Simmons played around a full delivery from left arm spinner Suleiman Benn, who generally bowled too short the score was 56-6 with half of the overs gone; but Barnwell and Narine added 44 in 7.3 overs before Narine who pulled Fidel Edwards for six to post the 100 in the 18th over, departed next ball.
The Warriors needed 12 from 6 balls after Martin Guptill (4), Mohamed Hafeez (0), Skipper Denish Ramdin (4), Leon Johnson (1) and Neesham (7) had all departed with just 43 runs on the board.
Beaton (8*) and Permaul (3*) aided by terrible fielding and catching from the Red Steel and a vital slice for four through a miss-field by Edwards at short third man, give the ‘Warriors’ a second life.
Earlier, only Evin Lewis (39) and Pooran whose 17-ball 37 included a six over long off and a reverse sweep for four in Narine’s final over, reached double figures for the Red Steel as Narine (2-23) and Beaton (2-15) were the most successful bowlers for the Amazon Warriors.
The next match is scheduled for tomorrow from 16:00hrs when the Warriors face the St Lucia Zouks at Providence.
