8th Annual Caribbean Powerlifting Championships – St. Croix USVI…
Guyana ended its participation at the 8th Annual Caribbean Powerlifting Championships at the Kings Hill, St. Croix Education Complex in the United States Virgin Islands on a high when Karel Mars copped silver in the 105kg class, where the big boys play.
Mars’ medal meant that every athlete on the six member team medaled which in itself is a monumental achievement by the athletes that financed their own participation.
Mars who was on the verge of bombing out after failing his first two attempts (195kg) in the bench press, was able to call on his vast experience to get his third attempt at the same weight before going on to claim the silver. He also missed his first attempt of the day in the squat (320kg).
His best squat was 337.5kg, benchpress 195kg, deadlift 297.5kg, total 830kg.
Taking the gold medal was former 93kg champion Puerto Rico’s Ramon Burgos who has stepped up in weight class and proved that he is the best even in the higher division, achieving a best squat 337.5, benchpress 210kg, deadlift 342.5kg to total 890kg.
Adrian Browne of Trinidad and Tobago was the bronze medalist; best squat 315kg, benchpress 190kg, deadlift 315kg, total 820kg.
Athletes from the host nation USVI, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana competed. Guyana were defending Team Champions for the past two years, but based on the fact that only six persons were able to travel, Puerto Rico with the full complement of eight athletes coupled with their high medal return were in line to dethrone the Guyanese.
The presentation and official results of team champions were set for last evening at the farewell Banquet Buffet.
