The Ministry of Public Works’ Force Account Unit will be undertaking the rehabilitation and maintenance of the Linden to Ituni/ Kwakwani and Mabura Roads to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during this rainy season.
This was disclosed by Naeem Mohamed, Hinterland Roads Engineer of the Public Works Ministry, during an interview with this publication yesterday.
Mohamed related that Government will be spending $100M to repair the Linden to Ituni/ Kwakwani Road and $70M on the Mabura Road. These sums are part of the $1B allocated in this year’s National Budget to rehabilitate and maintain hinterland roads.
Currently the Ministry is looking at ways to address the roadways due to their bad conditions. He was quick to add that they are not impassible and in the event that heavy rainfall continues emergency works would be done.
The Force Account Unit that did works on the Amaila Falls access road, and regularly maintains the Ituni Road, is scheduled to start works on the Linden to Ituni/ Kwakwani Road in less than two weeks, while works on the Mabura thoroughfare will commence within a month’s time.
Mohamed related that the scope of the projects includes grading and shaping of the roadways and preparing and overlaying the area with laterite. He said the Ministry decided to execute the projects because of available skills and equipment. There will be subcontracting of certain aspects such as trucking of material and rental of equipment.
