The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) in collaboration with Digicel commenced the National Senior Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Squash Courts on Wednesday evening last.
A fit Alwyn Callender defeated Mike Atherly and Robin Low in the Veteran Over-50 category to capture the title on the opening night. Last night, matches were played in three of the four categories and the bespectacled Callender rolled back the years to beat Atherly 11-7, 11-6, 11-4. He maintained his dominance in the division with 11-4, 11-2, 11-5 victory over Low.
In the Men’s Open category Antonio Joseph defeated Dustin Barrow 11-9, 3-11, 11-8, 11-9 while Haopei Yang beat Jamaal Douglas 11-7, 11-6, 11-1 to advance to the next stage.
Brian Yong defeated Jerry Mekdeci 11-8, 11-4, 11-5 and Timothy Jonas got past David Fernandes 11-8, 11-6 in the Veterans 35-49 years division. The competition continues this evening from 18:00h at the same venue with action in the Men’s and Women’s Open.
