Queenstown Secondary opened their quest for top honours in this year’s Digicel Schools Football
Championship with a clinical display against fellow city school, Freeburg at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, yesterday afternoon.
With steady wind streaming across the ground from the Atlantic, Queenstown also had the ball spotting back to the centre line on a regular basis. When the final whistle sounded, the score read, Queenstown 10; Freeburg 0.
With attractive prizes at stake in this year’s competition, Queenstown made their intentions clear from early in the piece, scoring with the game less than a minute old. Ijahfar John blasted the nets 27 seconds into the match and there was no looking back thereafter.
The level of maturity and tactical awareness displayed by the Queenstown lads, coached by former National Player Gordon Henry, was admirable as the winners went about the job in a businesslike manner.
Wilinson Meneses rocked the nets on three occasions as did his teammate, Dwayne Jeffrey. Meneses scored in the 7th, 23rd and 85th minute. Jeffrey was on target in the 64th, 76th and 81st minute.
The other players hitting network for the winners were Emanuel Hawker (41st), Jason Williams in the 55th minute and Kelsey Benjamin three minutes later.
