In commemoration of World Day against Child Labour, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security yesterday hosted a forum where the strides made towards combating the social ill were highlighted.
The session which was held at the Ministry’s building in Brickdam, Georgetown, was hosted by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Patrick Findlay, Senior Labour Officer Karen Van Sluytman-Corbin and other labour officers.
The group discussed the implementation of systems towards combating child labour and focused on raising countrywide awareness.
Findlay, in his address, explained that the lack of school attendance among youths consequently leads to child labour. He stressed the need for children to attend school, stating that childhood only comes once, and an individual’s deprivation of being a child could have a severe impact on their adult life.
Adding to his sentiments, Senior Labour Officer Karen Van Sluytman-Corbin said that the public should be reminded that children of age 15 and below are strictly prohibited from working. She added that all 16 to 18-year-olds should under no condition be subjected to industrial-strength employment.
According to Findlay, the Ministry has coordinated and executed social events such as football and cricket matches at schools across the country. He revealed that brochures focusing on sensitizing the issue are currently in distribution. These mechanisms were administered to advertise and increase the awareness of child labour among Guyanese.
The hosting entity also made a call for support from more corporations and influential parties, in order to not only curb, but ultimately eliminate this issue.
The Ministry officials also expressed gratitude towards trade unions and the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industry Limited (CAGI) for their unrelenting efforts to forward this cause.
The general public was encouraged to not lay dormant but rather take steps to intervene by contacting the Ministry’s Child Labour hotline on 225-7302 or 227-3133/35 to report victims of this social impurity.
