The Guyana Gold Board (GGB), through the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, has refuted that the closure of its Charity, Essequibo office is due to the lack of technical staff. The branch will close by month end.
In a statement, the Ministry related that, “the assimilation of the reason proffered for the closure of the Charity Office of the Guyana Gold Board is inaccurate to say the least. The ‘lack of technical staff’ can only be considered as nondescript.”
The release mentioned that at a meeting with the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) and dealers of the precious metal, “it was discussed, that the purchases were averaging less than five hundred ounces per month; as such the cost of running that office compared to the income on that quantity does not make it financially and economically viable to continue.”
It was stated that the GGB is willing to consider any dealer or potential dealer to take over operations at the Charity location. As regards the Bartica Office, it was noted that replacing the staff is not the only issue that the entity will have to contend with as it relates to the future operations.
“The Guyana Gold Board will have to be sure that it has the ability and resources to implement the necessary measures in preventing a recurrence; also, there is the option of the dealers playing a bigger role in intermediating gold during this suspension of operations in Bartica.”
Kaieteur News had published earlier this week that the Charity office would be closed by month end. The information was related by a staffer when this publication had made telephone contact to inquire about the working hours. The staffer had indicated that the office would be closing because of limited staff.
It was also explained that the office was opened only from Tuesdays to Thursdays, but had opened on Monday last to facilitate dealers, since Mondays and Fridays were peak business days in the community.
Gold declaration has plunged by 20 percent, with allegations of hoarding and smuggling coming to the fore.
