While noting its concerns for the student population of the New Opportunity Corps (NOC), the Rights of the Child Commission (RCC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport conducted a capacity building workshop aimed at briefing participants on the tangible components of professionalism, leadership and the 2010 Sexual Offences Act.
The RCC is currently engaging with the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport to discuss a number of concerns, which were brought to the attention of the Commission by the student population of the NOC.
“Commissioners of the RCC have noted their commitment to the partnership with the Ministry as we address the developmental needs of Guyana’s at risk and disadvantaged children and young people,” the Commission said.
The Commission is also engaged in a number of initiatives with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) aimed at enhancing capacity at the NOC.
On Wednesday, senior staff members of the New Opportunity Corps, the Sophia, Kuru Kuru, and Vryman Erven Training Centres were part of the workshop which took place at the Ministry’s head office, Main Street Georgetown.
The session on professionalism examined aspects of workplace conduct which fit into the categories of competence, results oriented integrity and caring.
During the session on Leadership, participants were encouraged to contemplate the core causes or mission statements of their respective institutions.
The RCC also encouraged participants to share such core causes with the lower rungs of staff within their organisations upon their return.
Meanwhile, participants were exposed to a detailed presentation on the Sexual Offences Act 2010, conducted by the Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, Ms. Rosemary Benjamin Noble.
The group examined general and new offences outlined in the legislation, which include offences against children under 16 years, obstruction by persons in a position of trust, sexual offences against persons with mental disorders, and the powers of the judiciary.
RCC Commissioners Colleen Anthony, Sandra Hooper and Chairperson of the Commission, Aleema Nasir, further clarified Noble’s presentation as participants took the opportunity to discuss a number of areas outlined in the Act.
The Capacity Building Workshop is the product of a substantial partnership between the two institutions which aims to empower and elevate the capacity of the various subject bodies to better discharge their mandates.
The Rights of the Child Commission has made two visits to the NOC for this year during which training was conducted with the staff. During the training exercise, the RCC focused on the needs of children, shaping of human development, components of the Juvenile Offenders & Sexual Offences Act, the psycho-social role of caregivers in a juvenile correctional facility and leadership development.
The RCC has also made visits and conducted similar workshops with the staff of the Sophia and Kuru Kuru Training centres. The Commission intends to continue work in these Centres.
