Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago have a long history of intense rivalry and when they clash today in the NACRA Men’s 15’s Championship to determine the winner of the Southern Zone it will be another day of rejoicing for one team and a period of heartbreak for the other.
Last year it was Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) turn to rejoice at the expense of calamity for Guyana and heading into today’s important fixture, the local ruggers have been singing one tune that of revenge.
The Trinidadians arrived yesterday morning and the members looked fit and ready to battle the Guyanese in their own backyard.
Earlier in the week, Kaieteur Sport caught up with Head Coach Clinton Clarke and he exuded confidence ahead of today’s encounter at the National Park, starting from 16:00 hrs.
“We are coming off a morale boosting win against Barbados and all that is on our minds right now is revenge against the Trinis who beat us last year,” Clarke stated.
The experienced former Captain and Coach Theodore Henry, who has returned a s a player also gave his take on the upcoming encounter against the Trinidadians.
“We are not afraid of them and I’m confident that come Saturday we will dethrone the defending regional champions and reclaim what rightfully belongs to us.”
Guyana will be at full strength for the game with T&T-based players Richard Staglon, Ronald Mayers and Peabo Hamilton along with US-based Vallon Adams, all making themselves available for the showdown.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Rugby Football Union is urging all Guyana to wear green and come out and support the national team in their quest to defeat the Trinidadians.
