Shocked and flabbergasted were the words used by members of the Young Warriors Cricket Club of Cumberland Village, East
Canje, Berbice, when they learnt that their young and talented opening batsman, Shimron Hetmyer was not included as one of the four under-19 players in the Guyana Franchise for the Caribbean Premier League, a release from the club stated.
The release said that they hoped that the youngster is not disheartened and his non selection is related to being a Berbician. Thorough checks were made and the club learnt that the players were selected by the junior selection panel. However, the club is certain that the selectors don’t have the final say. People in authority must realize that they are playing with the mind and most importantly, the career of a cricketer who is touted to have West Indies material in him. Actions like this will not help the suffering West Indies cricket team.
The club added that it is public knowledge that Shimron has all the qualities and credentials to be part of this excellent development process. Record shows that every tournament he participated in, he makes the team whether its zone, Berbice, Guyana or West Indies. Remember, he recently represented the Region’s under-19 team in Dubai. What are the selectors telling this young cricketer? To walk away from the game? The club already lost Shimron’s club mate, former West Indies junior and senior National opener Richard Ramdeen through similar circumstances.
The Young Warriors Cricket Club calls on the sponsors, Limacol to intervene and help. The club wishes to reiterate that it is in full support of the Cricket Administration Bill and thanked the ruling party and the main opposition for allowing good sense to prevail. Here again it shows how important this noble game is to this nation. Cricket crosses all races, politics and religion, the release stated.
