Today Statistician Charwayne Walker looks back at Guyana’s basketball history. The main aspect of his focus was the performance of the local female team in the 1996 Caricom championship. This comes in the lead up to this year’s event which Guyana are set to attend and hope they can rewrite the history books with an outstanding performance.
The first time Guyana Female National Basketball team participated at the Caricom level was July 1986 in Trinidad & Tobago. The team led by the versatile Joycelyn Merchant, who also represented Guyana at netball, left Piarco International Airport winless. But two members of that historic squad, Karen Abrams and Carolyn Williams, returned to Trinidad 10 years later in 1996 and there was a different atmosphere at Piarco.
Unlike 1986 there were no tears of sorrow because the Girls from the land of the Majestic Kaieteur were en route to Timehri International Airport with Guyana’s first and to date only Caricom championship trophy.
In Game one, Guyana defeated Barbados 53 to 51 in overtime, while in game two they defeated Bahamas 66 to 57. Captain Karen Abrams scored 17 pts, Melayni Cromwell 15 pts Urani Browne 9 pts.
Game three they lost to host Trinidad 104 to 49; Melayni Cromwell 17 pts, Urani Browne 15 pts, Captain Karen Abrams 11 pts were the top shots for the Guyanese. Game four saw them defeating Jamaica 84 to 82 with Captain Karen Abrams 22 pts, Urani Browne 10 pts and 16 rebounds and Melayni Cromwell 17 pts.
Game five Guyana defeated Grenada 58 to 40; Captain Karen Abrams 13 pts, 8 Rebounds Audrey Doorn 11 pts, 7 rebounds and Shellon Adams 10 pts led the effort.
Game six, the semi-finals vs Barbados, Guyana romped to a 71 to 52 triumph. Melayni Cromwell 22 pts, Captain Karen Abrams 14 pts, 13 rebounds, Uranie Browne 16 pts, 18 Rebounds, Roschelle Browne 8 pts, 7 Rebounds, 7 Assists led the charge.
Game seven, the final vs Jamaica, Guyana won 67 to 55 with Urani Browne 22 pts, Roschelle Browne 13 pts and Melayni Cromwell 13 pts. Guyana’s Urani Browne was named the tournament best Defensive Player.
