DCC pile up highest local T20 total
By Sean Devers
The lights were in full effect and the action was pulsating at the DCC ground on Friday night as the home side took on the Rest of Georgetown combination in a feature T20 contest in the first hard ball night game to be played at the Queenstown venue.
While the night skies remained overcast with rain eventually stopping the contest with 3.3 overs bowled in the GT side’s innings, National all-rounder Christopher Barnwell proved the star attraction, leading the Queenstown line-up to the highest T20 total in Guyana’s cricket with a destructive 104 as DCC reached 251-5 when their 20 overs expired in Windy conditions.
Barnwell, one of three players in the game selected for this year’s second edition of the CPL, followed up his pugnacious 165 against GNIC last Saturday with another thunderous display of explosive power hitting as the powerful right-hander reached the boundary nine times and cleared it eight times.
Barnwell, who lead Guyana in the last Regional Super50 tournament in Trinidad, added 91 for the third wicket with 27-year-old Jamal Hinckson before Hinckson, who hit five sixes and six fours in his entertaining 56, was bowled by pacer Joshua Wade at 169-3.
This was after CPL selectee Trevon Griffith was removed by Cordell Mars before a run had been scored and Sherfane Rutherford (39) who added 78 with Barnwell for the second wicket before he fell to Robin Bacchus, the third CPL player in the contest.
In a slight drizzle Dennis Squires, who hit two towering sixes in his 12, departed at 188-4. Barnwell and teenager Kemol Savory (19*) put together 42 runs in quick time as he demonstrated little mercy for the hapless bowlers on the small ground.
Barnwell fell to Mars at 230-5 as only left-arm spinner Raj Nanan, who bowled four overs for 25 runs, escaped the vicious onslaught.
Mars was the most successful and most expensive of the bowling picking up 2-50 from his four overs.
Such was the dominance of the DCC batting that Essequibo left-arm spinner Ricardo Adams who bowled fours overs for nine runs when Police upset DCC in the GCA first division T20 tournament, conceded 35 runs from just two overs on Friday night before he was pulled out of the attack as a fair sized gathering enjoyed the DCC run feast.
Barnwell reached his ton with a huge six out of the ground off Mars and continues to be brutal at the domestic level.
The GT side lost Andrew Lyght Jr (12) at 36-1 before the night’s final shower ended the contest with the score on 37-1.
The left-handed Bacchus was unbeaten on 11 which included an effortless check-drive to the point boundary and arguable the shot of the match; a magnificent cover drive which reached the boundary like a scud missile.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
