A father of one, implicated in a domestic abuse hearing before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, yesterday attempted suicide, by ingesting a poisonous substance, moments before he was scheduled to appear before a City Magistrate.
The man who was identified as Shannon Hooper, 33, of New Amsterdam, Berbice, is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Relatives have since confirmed that the man was engaged in an ongoing court battle with the mother of his eighteen-month-old child.
“He and he child mother had an issue and he went in de lock ups, we ain’t know what really happen but we just hear that he drink poison,” a relative stated yesterday.
However, Kaieteur News understands that Hooper was accused of abusing and threatening his reputed wife.
He was standing outside of Court 3 of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, awaiting the hearing when he reportedly ingested the substance.
Eyewitnesses recounted that moments before, Hooper tried to speak with his reputed wife but she ignored him.
“We just see like he staggering when he matter call up and he start to froth, then he start vomit and eventually he collapse outside the courtroom… Dem Police officers assist he ‘cause he couldn’t walk” an eyewitness recounted.
The man was transported to GPHC in a van that transports prisoners to and from the lock ups.
Hospital sources have since confirmed that Hooper is in a critical but stable condition.
He is suspected to have consumed a combination of toxic chemicals used for treating plants.
