Motorists who use the normally clogged up East Bank Demerara carriageway will get some immediate relief as the Guyana Police Force has announced plans to ease the congestion during peak hours of traffic.
A press statement from the police said that in an effort to ease the traffic build up during peak hours along the East Bank of Demerara, with effect from today, a three-lane system between the Demerara Harbour Bridge and the Houston Access Road will be put into effect.
The arrangement will be between the hours of 07:00 to 09:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00 on Monday to Friday.
According to the police, during the morning period, in addition to the two lanes on the western carriageway, the western lane of the eastern carriageway will also be used to accommodate motor vehicles travelling north into Georgetown.
While during the afternoon period the eastern lane of the western carriageway will be added to the two lanes on the eastern carriageway to accommodate motor vehicles travelling south along the East Bank of Demerara Highway.
Since the development of new housing areas on the East Bank, West Bank and West Coast of Demerara the East Bank carriageway has become very congested to vehicular traffic.
It would sometimes take motorists hours to make the eight mile journey from Grove to Georgetown.
This has prompted government to undertake the multi-billion dollar road widening project which will see the East Demarara Carriageway become a four land highway.
However, the project has been delayed by several circumstances, prolonging the hardship that the motorists are facing.
The police had initially implemented a plan to halt the movement of large trucks on the road between certain peak hours.
This move was not adequate enough to alleviate the problem and was also deemed as discriminatory.
This new traffic move by the police will not only benefit those motorists who live along the East Bank of Demerara, but also those who are travelling across the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The police are asking motorists to cooperate with the ranks who will be directing traffic during the two stated peak periods.
