The body of a 31-year-old fisherman was pulled to shore early yesterday, minutes after he was struck and flung into a trench by a speeding motor vehicle that fled the scene.
The accident occurred at 05:50 hrs on the Railway Embankment in the vicinity of Bel Air, Georgetown.
Dead is Fizul Hussain, a father of two of Success Sideline Dam, East Coast Demerara.
Police in a statement said that investigations so far have revealed that the father of two was fishing along the Embankment when he was struck down by a motor vehicle that was driven away from the scene.
At Hussain’s home yesterday, relatives could not believe that the young father had met his demise in such a manner.
A friend of the dead man, Kamal Hussain, explained that he and the 31-year-old fisherman left home around 04:30 hrs yesterday to catch fish.
“When we reach our usual location, I left Fizul by the road side and I went like about 60 rods away from him to throw my cast net,” Kamal Hussain said.
He further explained that about five minutes after he left his friend on the roadside, he heard a loud noise and then he saw a splash in the water.
“I didn’t think it was anything really so I continue to throw my cast net,” the friend explained.
According to Hussain, after throwing his net into the water, he went to where he left his friend but could not find him.
“I look everywhere and I couldn’t see him and there was no one on the road so I went over to the bus to see if he went there but he wasn’t there.”
Realizing that something was definitely wrong, Hussain said he immediately started to stop vehicles that were passing on the road.
“A man stopped and I explained to him what happened and he say that we have to check in the trench so he stayed at the top and I went down in the water and I was feeling for him (Fizul Hussain),” the dead man’s friend said.
According to Hussain, after searching in the water for some time he felt a “human hand” and upon checking, he discovered it was his friend who was in the water.
“I dragged him out and the man helped me to lift him onto the road and we take him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Hussain stressed.
Fizul Hussain leaves to mourn his wife and two children.
