Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) edged past arch rival Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) 1-0 in the final of the fifth Trinidad and Guyana Sports Club and Outreach Programme (TGSCOP) U13 Inter Secondary School football competition for schools in the NA/Canje district, which was played on Friday at the All Saints Scott’s Church ground in New Amsterdam.

The winning BEI team pose with their silverware, teachers, organisers and sponsors after the presentation ceremony.
The competition was organized by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club. The game was evenly contested with both teams fighting for all their worth to secure the coveted trophy. The BEI unit looked more likely to break the deadlock, but the lads from VESS fought hard to thwart them and sprung some counterattacks of their own.
The top players in the match lived up to expectation and showed dominance and brilliance at times which augurs well for the future. The dead lock was broken in the 45th minute when leading goal scorer Dwaine Alleyne netted his 7th goal in the competition, which was enough to see them to the end and title.
Tutorial Academy was awarded third place.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, the winning CSS team was presented with the Trinidad and Guyana (T&G) Sports Club and Outreach Programme trophy. VESS collected the second place trophy, while TASS got one for placing third.
A number of individual awards were also presented to outstanding performers and they went to Dwayne Alleyne of BEI for being the top goal scorer in the competition with his seven goals. He also won the award last year for scoring six goals.
The Best Defender on show was Shaquan Durant also of BEI. Devaun Pyle of VESS was the best midfielder on show. Best Goalkeeper prize went to Gerald Forde of BEI. He also won that award last year. The players were presented with trophies, shin pads and hose among other gifts.
President of the organization, June Britton, congratulated the winners and thanked all the teams for participating in the competition. She urged the others to try harder next time.
She also had special words of commendation for the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club for organizing the competition which was incident free. The competition was coordinated by former national players Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey and Kenrick Bowry. (Samuel Whyte)
