– Launch to be held outside G/town
Sponsorship and Events Manager of Digicel, Gavin Hope ,speaking recently confirmed that the Organising Committee responsible for putting all the systems in place for the hosting of this year’s Schools Football Tournament has intensified preparations and he expects all the preliminary work to be completed in time for the June 6 Launch.
Hope, who has been involved in the tournament since its conception four years ago, said that because the company has consistently attempted to lift the all-round standard of the competition every year, the Organising Committee has already hosted three coaching workshops with another one scheduled to be held shortly.
The former sprinter and national hockey player, in commenting on the response to the workshops, said he was encouraged by the level of interest and enthusiasm exhibited by representatives of the schools listed to participate in this year’s competition.
“We are heartened by the level of interest; we’ve seen in all the areas a good turnout. In two of the areas we’ve visited we had in excess of 35 persons, which is excellent, taken into consideration some areas have five and six schools participating. For example, in Lethem we have seven schools, Berbice is much more, but we had in excess of 35 persons. We certainly look forward to similar turnouts in the other areas,” Hope mentioned.
He said one of the changes to be made this time is to have the Launch done outside of Georgetown which had hosted it for all three previous years.
He, however, was not able to confirm in which Region the Launch will be held.
Hope reminded that the tournament is not a Georgetown-based event only; adding that it is played in every region in Guyana and the wish of the Management is to take it to some other community outside of Georgetown and get more persons involved.
Tournament Co-ordinator Lavern Fraser-Thomas in her remarks said the number of schools that already confirmed participation to date is in the vicinity of last year’s total, while many more are anticipated to submit their registration forms sometime this week.
She articulated the Company’s plan which is to have games played at new venues, ultimately aimed at providing other communities the opportunity to display their way of life, natural features and diversity to participants in the competition.
“We’ve started our work very early, visiting several new locations and doing inspections of their facilities to verify their capability and readiness to host matches. Schools are basically getting an opportunity to benefit two-fold by participating in the biggest junior football tournament locally,” Fraser-Thomas noted.
Among the new places that they have visited with the hope of staging matches are Santa Rosa in Region One; Wowetta in Region Nine; Siparuta and Orealla in Region Six and Hauraruni and St. Cuthbert Mission in Region Four.
