President Donald Ramoutar is expected to be the chief celebrant in the rededication ceremony of the once famous Burnham Park set for today in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
After being dormant and neglected for a number of years the facility, which was once one of the premiere sporting venues in Guyana, had some rehabilitation work done at the venue.
The $7M project saw a bleacher (63×26) with eight platforms being constructed. Toilet facilities with a reservoir were also built. Excavation of the drains, some land filling and fencing were also done.
Apart from President Ramoutar, other dignitaries including Regional Chairman David Armogan and Mayor Claude Henry are also expected to attend and give speeches.
Burnham Park, which was named after the late founder leader Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, sits on approximately 10 acres of land on the outskirt of the New Amsterdam/ Fort Canje area.
The famous ground, which is one of the few that holds a 400M track comfortably, was where a number of famous Berbice and Guyana national players honed their skills including the Alphonsos, the Humphreys, the Fords, the Samuels, the Inniss and many more. Athletics, cycling, motorcycle, car and a number of other sporting and cultural activities were also held at the venue. Famous groups like Third World also visited the venue to exhibit their talent.
