The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) ‘Nuff cuff injection’ amateur boxing card fixed for the Buxton Friendship Community Centre ground on May 31 is expected to take on an international flavour with boxers from St Lucia being involved once all goes according to plan.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle told Kaieteur Sport that use of the venue has been confirmed and he has extended heartfelt gratitude to Sherry Abrams and Colin Wills of the Buxton Friendship Playfield Committee for all the help they gave in affording GBA the use of the facility.
Ninvalle further informed that following recent talks with David ‘Shakes’ Christopher, President of the St Lucia Boxing Association, the process has started to get at least two fighters from that island to participate in the Buxton event.
Ninvalle stated that Christopher informed that he intends to send Arthur Langillier, who participated in the GBA Goodwill tournament here in February last with a team of St Lucian fighters, and possibly female boxer Merlander St Clair. A final decision is to be met based on funding to have the St Lucians travel here by their association.
Guyana and St Lucia have a very good working relationship with the two presidents making several agreements in the past which are now bearing fruit for their respective boxers. Langillier is currently preparing for participation in the Commonwealth Games and Christopher is keen to have him as active as possible in the lead up to the games.
So the Buxton fans will hopefully get some international flavour entertainment. This event follows on the heels of a very successful programme in East Ruimveldt.
Ninvalle and the GBA executives must be commended after the decision to shift cards to the communities in the hope of injecting impetus in the development of the sport and whip up more support from Guyanese for the young boxers.
The East Ruimveldt attendance is testimony of the success of their move and it is expected that Buxton will further highlight the soundness of that decision in taking the sport to the Guyanese people.
The involvement of the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) after several years was also a big plus for GBA.
These programmes should also goad sponsors to readily jump onboard with the GBA. Ansa McAl and Demerara Distillers Limited have lent tremendous support in the past and are expected to continue their support.
According to the GBA Boss, they will head to Golden Grove in the next edition of the ‘Nuff Cuff injection’ programme.
