Come next month, June 2014, the West Indies Cricket team will host New Zealand for three test matches. Today Kaieteur Sports and Statistician Charwayne Walker looks back at New Zealand first tour to the Caribbean in 1972, starting with the first match.
West Indies led by the legendary Garry Sobers failed to win any of the five test matches. Strange enough the series ended in a stalemate with every match ending in a drawn.
First Test Sabina Park was drawn. West Indies first innings 508 for 4 declared debutant Lawrence Rowe 214, Roy Fredericks 163, Michael Joey Carew 43. Bowling for New Zealand, H.J. Howarth took 2 for 108 from 44 overs.
New Zealand first innings 386 all out, Glenn Turner 223, K.J. Wadsworth 78; Bowling for West Indies, Grayson Shillingford took 3 for 63 from 26.5 overs, Uton Dow 3 for 75 from 29 overs, David Holford 2 for 64 from 44 overs, Lance Gibbs 2 for 94 from 45 overs.
West Indies second innings 218 for 5 declared, debutant Lawrence Rowe 100 Not out, Charlie Davis 41, Roy Fredericks 33. Brian Congdan took 2 for 45. New Zealand second innings 236 for 6, M.G. Burgess 101, K.J. Wadsworth 36 not out, David Holford took 4 for 55 from 33 overs.
