With 12 stakeholders consultations already conducted, Region One has been leading the way to carefully examine the Ministry of Education’s Draft Professional Standards for Teachers. Five such engagements have been held in Georgetown, while three each have been conducted in Regions Six, Three and Two. Two consultations have been held in Region Seven.
Moreover, a total of 28 consultations have been conducted across the Regions since the Draft document was introduced earlier this year.
According to a statement issued by the Education Ministry, consultations on the draft Professional Standards continue to gain momentum in Guyana and have garnered substantial participation from the public.
“The Ministry of Education is pleased that the public has recognized the imperativeness of establishing professional standards which teachers will be expected to follow towards Guyana achieving the desired educational outcomes…This acknowledgment is evidenced by the active participation of the public in every consultation and the number of engagements online over the past weeks,” the statement outlined.
According to Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, the forthcoming responses have been heartening. In fact, during a recent interview with this publication, she said that the document has even been attracting overseas attention as well.
“It is very pleasing to me to see persons living abroad giving their input too. I will write to each of them personally to say thanks for being interested and paying attention to our sites and to actively engage with us,” the Minister told this publication.
The overseas response, she disclosed, has seen the Ministry being able to access other similarly crafted documents from various countries which could help guide the way forward.
“It has been extremely good, the input we have been getting so far, because people are telling us what they think is wrong or right,” added the Minister.
Copies of the draft Professional Standards for Teachers were made available to teachers in the printed form for their perusal and comments. The ministry has also placed the document on its website, www.education.gov.gy to allow additional comments to be made and to facilitate those who would like to contribute but are unable to physically be present at consultations. In addition, members of the public were invited to submit their comments on the document via email at [email protected].
Professional Standards are designed to offer the professional community specifications against which teachers are able to set goals for personal development and progress in the profession. The Standards are multi-dimensional and give cognizance to the key props for learning to take place, namely a motivated and willing learner, effective teaching and learning, and an enabling environment.
Once implemented, the Standards will serve as a tool to monitor and evaluate teachers’ performance in the classroom, knowledge of the subject(s) they teach, techniques used and level of commitment to the learners in their care, and effectively manage diversity to promote inclusiveness in the learning process. The Standards will also help teachers sharpen their professional skills and help them interact with parents and the community.
The consultations commenced on February 26 last at the Kamarang Primary School, and are slated to come to an end by July. It is expected that a total of 71 consultations will be held across Guyana.
“Through the establishment of professional teacher standards, the Ministry strongly believes the teaching profession will be significantly strengthened, further recognized and aptly placed among the other leading professions in Guyana,” said a statement from the Ministry.
