Basil Cuthbert Rodrigues, more affectionately called Uncle Basil, was on Wednesday laid to
rest in his beloved Santa Rosa, Moruca after a brief illness. Eulogized by the Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett who herself is a ‘daughter of the soil’, citizens of the community Graham Atkinson, Murphy DeSouza, members of the Region One Education Fraternity, Ms. Hermina Rebeiro District Education Officer (ag) and Mr. Nigel Richards Regional Executive Officer, Uncle Basil’s humble traits and cultural and education contribution to his community was fully articulated.
Basil Rodrigues’s funeral service was presided over by the local Catholic Church of which he was a devoted member.
One unique observation was that the congregation was almost evenly split between both the young (even school students) and those who are members of his generation. Another unique act of paying tribute was a phone link-up between Annai (North Rupununi) and Santa Rosa; Morucan Mr. Victor Ferreira, fellow educator and musician with Uncle Basil composed his tribute and performed his piece via this link-up.
Basil Rodrigues MS AA, leaves to mourn Delores Rodrigues, his wife of some 55 years, son Wallace, and daughters Beverley and Kay.
Uncle Basil was recognized by Kaieteur News as a Special Person.
