Being in possession of a fancy cell phone and given his penchant to do some text messaging as well as the desire to meet a new client led to a schoolboy being nabbed on a robbery with violence charge. He believed that he was turning up to meet a new date.
He appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs-Marcus and was granted bail in the sum of S50, 000.
The youth was charged on March 4, last. At Trinity Street, New Amsterdam while in company of others he allegedly robbed Deshano Baboolall of one box of Church’s Chicken, one wallet, US $100, two gold chains, one Black Berry Curve Cell phone and one Republic Bank card.
Deshano Baboolall, a mechanic of Asylum Street, New Amsterdam, was walking through Trinity Street after purchasing a box of Church’s Chicken. He was suddenly accosted by two young men, one of whom choked him.
The men proceeded to beat him and to rummage through his pocket before taking away the items. He was beaten unconscious. When he regained consciousness he was lying on the road in pain.
A report was subsequently made at the Police station and the victim was treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Subsequently one of the victim’s female friends was texting and sending BBM to a number of persons. One of the messages went to the phone number that Baboolall owned. She subsequently received a response enquiring about her. A conversation developed and she and the person started to communicate.
A meeting was subsequently arranged since the persons wanted to meet the female on the other side. However she did not show up. A subsequent meeting was arranged and the police staked out the area in a sting operation.
Lo and behold the school boy turned up in his school uniform with a few accomplices to meet his date and was promptly arrested.
He could not post the bail and was being held in custody. He will have to return to court on May 30.
