Quick police response by ranks of a police mobile unit yesterday led to the arrest of a gunman, who along with an accomplice had attacked a 34-year-old city resident to relieve him of the jewellery he was wearing.
The police had responded to the sound of gunshots, which were discharged by the bandits when they met with fierce resistance from their victim, Marcel Fitzalbert.
A release from Eve Leary said that at about10:30 hours yesterday, two men, one of whom was armed with a firearm, confronted Fitzalbert as he was walking along a road in Festival City, North Ruimveldt, and demanded the jewellery he was wearing.
According to the police, Fitzalbert put up a resistance and a scuffle ensued between himself and the armed man, during which rounds were discharged. Fortunately no one was injured.
A police mobile patrol was in the area and the sounds of the gunshots caused them to respond immediately.
The bandits were certainly not prepared for the swift police response, and only the one who had snatched Fitzalbert’s chain managed to escape. The other bandit who had the firearm was not so lucky; he was held with a 9mm pistol and five matching rounds of ammunition.
Contrary to the police report, this newspaper was told that Fitzalbert might have wounded one of the bandits during the scuffle.
According to reports, when the men who were on bicycles confronted him, Fitzalbert defended himself with a knife. It is believed that he too sustained minor injuries.
When contacted by this newspaper yesterday, one of Fitzalbert’s relatives said that he was unable to speak since he was seeking medical attention at a city hospital.
