The Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC), Ronald Webster died at the Balwant Singh Hospital yesterday. He was recuperating at the private hospital after he had recently undergone a cancer surgery in Trinidad.
The death of the Chairman has come as a surprise to many of his friends, relatives and members of the Commission.
President Donald Ramotar said the disheartening news comes as a surprise and on behalf of his family and the people of Guyana; he extends most profound condolences to the Webster family and the Private Sector community.
“Mr. Webster was admired for his values which underpinned his commitment to public service and the promotion of national development, mainly through private enterprise activities. He left an indelible print on the private sector society, which will be sorely missed. Mr. Webster will always be remembered as a genuine partner in national development, a true patriot and as someone who has given unequivocal support, above narrow, selfish interests. Once again, my condolences and may his soul rest in peace.”
Joining in the President’s message of condolence was Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert M. Persaud.
The Minister said, “It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment mourns the passing of Mr. Ronald Webster, and extends most sincere condolences to his family and colleagues in the Private Sector Commission. Mr. Webster served Guyana with great distinction. Our lives have been enriched as a result of the tireless pursuit, wealth of experience and unwavering commitment of Ronald Webster through the various organizations of which he was a leader. The MoNRE salutes Mr. Webster and mourns his passing.”
Persaud recalled that Webster embarked upon his career at the Booker Group of Companies and became the youngest Managing Director of the company. He was the Managing Director of Technology Investments and Management Inc and at the time of his passing, he was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caribbean Container Inc.
Mr. Webster served as President of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association while also receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association. He also served as Vice-Chairman of the Private Sector Commission from 1998 to 1999.
“Mr. Webster demonstrated his dexterity on many Boards, including that of the Bauxite Industry Development Company Inc where he served as Chairman of the Board from 1999 to 2005. Mr. Ronald Webster also served as Director on the Board of the National Agricultural Research Institute and Chairman of the Board of the New GMC.”
The PSC Chairman was also a Director on the Board of the Aroaima Mining Company from 2004 and served as Chairman of both the Board of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission from 2005 to 2010 and the Environmental Protection Agency.
