A security guard attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is in police custody assisting with information relating to the disappearance of a large quantity of morphine from the Malaria Clinic.
The Malaria Clinic which falls under the Ministry of Health is located in the GPHC’s compound, on Middle Street, Georgetown.
Morphine, which falls under the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA), is a narcotic medicine used to relieve pain and is said to be quite expensive.
Kaieteur News was informed that the guard is claiming that around 01:00hrs yesterday, three men armed with a gun and knives reportedly scaled the hospital’s fence and confronted him.
According to sources, the security guard reportedly related to his superiors that he was held at gunpoint while the men escaped with his personal items and the morphine.
It is unclear how much morphine was stolen from the facility.
“This hospital doesn’t even have a proper guard hut at the back there. Last month was the same thing. A female security saw when thieves jump the fence and she raised an alarm and they escaped,” the source related.
Director of the Unit, Dr. Reyaud Rahman could not be reached yesterday for a comment.
Investigations are ongoing.
