On Wednesday last, the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) launched the 6th annual Republic Bank Under-17 Inter Zone tournament, an investment of some $200,000 by the bank which will also be providing uniforms for the two teams in the finals.
BCB Administrative Officer, Ms. Alisa Moonsee informed that they were once again pleased that Republic Bank was sponsoring the tournament which is a crucial link between the Under-15 and 19 levels in the Ancient County; assisting in the development of young players as they transfer to a higher level.
The tournament, Ms. Moonsee stated would involve West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Upper Corentyne. New Amsterdam/Canje would clash with West Berbice while Lower and Upper Corentyne in the opening round of competition with the respective winners going on to play in the finals.
The Berbice Under-17 Inter County team would be selected based on performances in this tournament.
Republic Bank, New Amsterdam Branch Manager, Mr. Randolph Sears hailed the relationship between the two entities noting that the bank was pleased to be associated with Berbice cricket while expressing confidence that the tournament would be a success.
First Vice President of the BCB Anil Beharry and Chairman of the Special Events committee Hilbert Foster both expressed gratitude to Republic Bank for its continued investment in Berbice.
Beharry stated that the BCB would be going into the school system to unearth more talent as the board strives to make sure that the game continues to grow. Foster noted that over the years, Republic Bank has assisted the BCB in several projects including the annual awards ceremony and review magazine.
