– Basketball Playoffs set to re-ignite rivalries in Linden
The organisers of “Mecca to Mackenzie” Basketball Playoffs, Sports Management Inc., revised the structure of awarding the prize money following their consultation with the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), which has sanctioned the event.
Initially, in an effort to motivate teams to put everything on the line, $50,000 was up for grabs in three games, winner-take-all, at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Court in Linden Saturday night, but that has since been revised to include monies for the losing teams.
Kaieteur Sport learnt yesterday that the winners in each of the three games will pocket $50,000 while the losing teams will get $25,000 each, raising the prize monies from an initial $150,000 to $225,000 for the single night of competition in Linden.
In addition, the winning teams will receive trophies while comedian Chow Pow hosts halftime giveaway shows, which is a bonus for patrons and fans. The organisers confirmed that a total of $300,000, including the prize monies, will be given away.
The “From Mecca to Mackenzie” Basketball Playoffs begins at 7pm with Linden’s Kings seeking to defend its throne against Georgetown’s Pacesetters. The night continues with Georgetown’s Colts taking on Linden’s Amelia’s Ward Jets. The final game of the night will be a replay of the National Championships Final between Georgetown’s Dyna’s Ravens and Linden’s Retrieve Raiders.
The tournament is aimed at giving Lindeners an opportunity to see what they may have missed at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on March 23 when the National Championships Final was held. It features the rematches with Linden having home advantage.
