DEAR EDITOR,
Does Freddie Kissoon think that readers are so obtuse and inane to accept his pretext for not addressing pertinent issues that particularize his daily missives? Does he think that even his friends will go for this subterfuge?
Listen again, folks: Among the reasons Mr. Kissoon gave for not responding to letter writers are: (1) They do not have his respect, (2) They will “not be read by others”, and (3) They do not contribute to a healthy debate on isssues.
For Mr. Kissoon’s information, ever since Minette Bacchus wrote her letter, “Kissoon finds a cover not to embarrass himself on the Rodney affair in a judicial setting” (KN, 24-03-14), readers have been waiting anxiously for a reply. Ms. Bacchus’ letter was well written, and the poignant question regarding Mr. Kissoon’s apparent self-confessed knowledge about Burnham’s role in Walter Rodney’s death. As the prolific daily columnist who mouths off on every political and civic subject, Mr. Kissoon has a moral responsibility to respond to Ms. Bacchus’ peeve.
It is also particularly slipshod for Mr. Kissoon to dismiss Harry Gill as one who simply seeks a stage, wanting attention. Mr. Gill is an acute observer and magnificent writer. And it is a shame that Mr. Kissoon tries to duck the crux of the matter in Mr. Gill’s letter which is the venom that emits from the columnist’s daily missives – full of aspersions, blame, calumny, condemnation and criticism.
You would think that the columnist would have responded to Mr. Gill’s viewpoint – that he (Kissoon) “lives in a very big house in an affluent neighbourhood, has an income, drives a vehicle, and abuses the very freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution and protected by the same people he libels: The President and Ministers of his Government.”
Instead of facing the facts like a man, Mr. Kissoon scampers like a frightened mouse in his hole when an intellectual threat is perceived.
