Dear Editor,
“ A remigrant should avoid importing a motor car that is more than 2000 cc unless he/she is absolutely certain that he/she can afford to pay the partial customs duty, consi.A6on tax, and purchase tax on same, since such amounts can be quite prohibitive eve the duty free concessions granted are considered..
An example is provided below:
On a motor car of 3000 cc for which the Customs and Excise Department has accepted the taxable value as being G$1,500,000
. 1/3 of Customs Duty of 45% – G$225,000
. 1/3 Consumption Tax of 30% – G$172,000 . 1/3 of Purchase Tax of 70% – G$442,750 . Total Taxes payable – G$8540,250
A friend of mine tried to convince me that this was a typographical mistake, but I am loathe to accept this. The Minister went to great lengths to make the argument that the duty to be paid would be “ quite prohibitive even when the duty free concessions granted are considered”. How about an International Commission of Forensic Auditors to determine how many were fooled into paying these prohibitive amounts. Why not investigate the General Secretary for acts committed during his term of office? Who were the then Remigration officers? George Isaac Jordan
