Dear Editor,
The Management of GT&T has noted with disappointment and concern an article captioned “Man, 21, almost had head severed,” which was published in the March 11, 2014 issue of Kaieteur News.
Management wishes to take this opportunity to publicly extend its sincere sympathy to Mr. Tareque Mentore for any injury he may have sustained in an incident on Bent Street on Monday.
Mr. Mentore visited our Head Office at approximately 13:00hrs on Monday, March 10, 2014 to report the accident which had reportedly taken place an hour earlier. The company immediately took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for examination and possible treatment. He was advised to return to our Head Office after seeking medical attention. Mr. Mentore has not made contact with GT&T since.
We were surprised and disappointed to learn that this accident was publicized by a reporter apparently without verification of the facts and definitely without inviting a comment from the company, since Kaieteur News like other media houses, has access to our Public Relations personnel. Our records indicate that no contact was made with our Public Relations Officers.
Our investigation reveals that while there was an incident in Bent Street, Georgetown involving an individual who became entangled with a telephone cable, it is not true that the cable suddenly fell, as suggested by the media report.
The eyewitness report obtained by our security personnel indicates that the cable in question was ripped from the utility pole by a passing truck and that Mr. Mentore who was immediately behind the truck became entangled by the cable.
Mr. Mentore was not injured as a result of negligence on the part of GT&T nor its employees.
Allison Parker
Public Relations Officer
