The British Queen’s Baton Relay, 0rganized to draw attention to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland, recently made its way to Guyana’s hinterland after arriving in Georgetown on March 2.
That baton is carrying the message that Queen Elizabeth II will deliver at the opening of the Games on 23 July, 2014.
On Tuesday last, the journey of the Baton Relay, which will cover 70 countries and nations, continued as Air Services Limited (ASL) flew the sports symbol to Aishalton and Orinduik in Regions Nine and Eight respectively.
In a reception at Aishalton Primary, which included activities from the Amerindian culture, Dr. Karen Pilgrim, Vice-President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) thanked the Deputy Regional Chairman, Mr. Douglas Casimero, for the initiative which had come about through the efforts of village chief Bernard Conrad.
The presentation format included six check-point displays featuring hammock-making, traditional mining, the Wapishana literacy programme funded by the Jesuits, wildlife, petroglyphs and processing of cassava. It concluded with Amerindian cultural performances at the school.
Casimero said, “We were pleased that this baton, which had been all over the world, to many famous places, came to our village in the south of Guyana.”
The Queen’s Baton Relay was launched at Buckingham Palace on October 9, 2013 at a ceremony where the Queen placed in the baton the message she will deliver at the opening of the Commonwealth Games this year.
From Guyana, the baton’s global tour will take it next to a reception in Trinidad and Tobago. At the conclusion of the tour in Scotland, it would have covered 190,00kilometres in a journey of 288 days.
