… bed-ridden as a result of spinal injuries
Oumesh Ballram, the 16-year-old who was shot in the abdomen three Thursdays ago at his Number 69 Village, Corentyne home during an attempted robbery, was discharged Thursday from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The Tagore Memorial Secondary School student underwent surgery the day after the incident to remove a warhead, which entered his body, a few inches below his heart and caused damage to his spine.
The teenager was first rushed to the Skeldon Hospital and was then transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being admitted to the GPHC for further treatment.
While at the GPHC, the extent of Oumesh Ballram’s injury was revealed and immediate surgery was required.
Kaieteur News was told that around 19:30 hrs on February 20, last, there was a power outage in the village. When electricity was restored, the teen’s father, Dinesh Ballram, went downstairs to switch over power from the inverter.
The 16-year-old was asked to turn on the main switch which was located next to the veranda door in the upper flat. Before he (teen) could have done what he was told to do, he was confronted by a gunman, who subsequently shot him. The gunman and an accomplice then fled the scene.
On Thursday, the teen’s father told this publication that his son is now bed-ridden and is expected to travel to the United States of America for further treatment. According to the older Ballram, he is awaiting some paperwork from the Ministry of Health. “When I get all the papers ready, then I will know when he will be going,” the shot teen’s father said.
When Kaieteur News spoke with the injured teenager three days before he was discharged from the hospital, he had complained about the severe pain he was experiencing but he was very jovial.
Meanwhile, the distraught father expressed dissatisfaction with the way the police are dealing with the matter. He said that ranks had held a man and then released him on $50,000 bail without informing him or any other family members.
The father is positive that the man who was held by police is the same man who shot his son and left him bed-ridden since he (the man who was held) is a known criminal.
However, When Kaieteur News contacted a rank from the police station yesterday, he said that they had arrested someone but released the individual after 72 hours since no one showed up to identify him.
The lawman added that they were waiting on the teen to be discharged from the hospital to carry out an identification parade – which is now expected to be done.
