The twenty-four schools represented at the Gender-based Violence Workshop which ended yesterday in the Boardroom of the Ministry of Health on Brickdam all agreed that the seminar was an overwhelming success that presented the opportunity for them to not only learn how to deal with and detect manifestations of the scourge, but that it also served to clear up misconceptions of the behaviour.
The Workshop which was facilitated by the Centre for Disease Control and
Prevention in association with the Ministry of Health and the Petra Organisation as part of its attempt to spread the message on Gender-based Violence and its eradication saw in attendance CDC Official Nicolette Henry, Adolescent Health Rep Dr. Ertenisia Hamilton, Co-ordinator of GBV Unit of the Ministry of Health Joy Gravesande and Petra Organisation Directors Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole.
Attended mostly by teachers of the schools participating in the Milo / Petra Organisation Football Competition, the participants were charged with the responsibility of returning to their respective institutions and impart when they had learned over the two-day period.
Among the topics that the participants were exposed to included Adolescent Development; difference between sex and gender; what is gender-based violence; sexual harassment versus flirting; examples of GBV and its causes including contributing factors and consequences of GBV among others.
The Resource personnel told the media that the CDC and the Ministry have been working in collaboration to eradicate the growing dilemma which has not only been restricted to Guyana, but the wider Caribbean as well and has become a topical issue for relevant stakeholders.
The promise was also made to involve the media which the facilitators regarded as one of the best conduits to spread the message as they seek to sensitize and eliminate its prevalence within the society.
