Defending champions Leonora Secondary were held to an exciting 1-1 draw by Zeeburg Secondary when play in the National Association of Women Football kicked off their Under-17 competition on Monday afternoon at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground.
Top class goal keeping by Zeeburg’s Sherne Kertzious kept her team in the hunt and Leonora at bay to ensure that they came away with an equal share of the points while dampening the spirits of the Leonora lasses.
It was the defending champions who took the lead through a Mandy Dainty 42nd minute goal sending their fellow students in the stands into jubilation. But even as Leonora assumed the advantage, Zeeburg had other plans, keeping the focus as they kept up the offensive pressure.
Their {Zeeburg} persistence paid off in the end as they were awarded a penalty in the 59th minute which was converted by La Shawn La Rose much to the delight of their supporters, fellow students and teachers.
It was the perfect start to what is anticipated to be an enthralling tournament.
