– Trinidad’s, Nero outclasses women
By Edison Jefford
Guyana’s distance-running ace, Cleveland Forde overcame early blitzes from Cleveland Thomas and Kelvin Johnson to power to the Wartsila 20km Road Race win yesterday morning, adding to his already bourgeoning trophy cabinet and his bank account.
Forde cashed in on the $300,000 first prize with a clinical and tactical performance in the race that made its way from Paradise, East Coast Demerara to Wartsila Headquarters, located at upper Water Street Kingston, with a time of 1:10:00.20 seconds.
Thomas finished second in a time of 1:10:38.90 and received $240,000, while Dennis Horatio had came from behind to place third in 1:10:52.60, receiving $200,000 in the process. The Trinidad and Tobago-based duo, Lionel D’Andrade and Johnson finished fourth and fifth respectively in times of 1:11.03.90 and 1:12:34.90 with Nathaniel Giddings (1:16:21) sixth.
D’Andrade was awarded $140,000 while Johnson and Giddings received $100,000 and $50,000 respectively. The women cashed in on the same monetary prize with Trinidad and Tobago’s, Tonya Nero taking home the top prize with a dominant performance.
Nero won in 1:19:37 while United States-based Guyanese, Euleen Josiah-Tanner placed second in 1:30:27. Twenty-year old newcomer, Alicia Jack positioned herself among the senior women for a third place finish in 1:33:10, which relegated Alika Morgan (1:34:10) to fourth place as the Defence Force’s Ashanti Scott (1:46:42) and Tiffany Williams (1:46:59) rounded off the top six among the senior females.
The race started with a nippy pace with Thomas, Horatio, D’Andrade and Winston Missenger in a lead pack with Giddings and Forde about 50m behind. Johnson joined Giddings, Forde and the rest of athletes in the second pack coming down at the 3km mark.
Thomas broke away and held on to the lead for the next two kilometres before Johnson caught him and dropped him. Johnson held on to the lead through the halfway mark with Forde about 10m behind and the rest of the pack strung out in hindsight.
However, the race dramatically changed around Subryanville on the Rupert Craig Highway with Forde changing gears to drop Johnson, which he successfully did. Johnson quickly faded in the race as Thomas, Horatio and D’Andrade caught him.
Andrea Foster won the Girls 5000m Youth race in 20:13.90 with Cassie Kirton second in 20:50 and Shantel Hinds (21:00.40) third. Moriah McKenzie (22:12) and Mearisha Carter (24:02) were fourth and fifth respectively.
Anfernee Headecker won the Boys 5000m Youth race with 17:26.70 ahead of Mathew McKenzie, who placed second in 17:36 and Joshua McKenzie (17:49). Joshua Walcott (18:58) and Orlando Adams (19:00) were fourth and fifth.
