They say that when it rains, it pours and local amateur boxers will be required to don the appropriate apparel as executives of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) pick up the pace to enhance their chances of acquiring accolades at the imminent 2016 Brazil Olympics.
To this effect, the team of three boxers identified to represent this country at the South American Boxing Championships in Chile, will depart Guyana Wednesday March 5 next. Those representatives are welterweight, Eon Bancroft, middleweight, Dennis Thomas and (woman) heavyweight, Theresa London. The tournament gets underway March 7-18 and the team will be accompanied by Terrence Poole who will serve as the Manager/Coach.
National bantamweight champion, Imran Khan was omitted from the team after he sustained an injury to his left wrist while competing in the just concluded 4 nation boxing championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) earlier this month.
President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle said that Khan’s injury has affected Guyana’s chances of procuring numerous medals but he (Ninvalle) is confident that the remaining pugilists will go on to do Guyana proud. He said that GBA was mulling a replacement but the other two boxers initially placed on standby were also ruled out. He said that one of them, Bert Braithwaite had sustained a cut during sparring sessions recently, while Ron Smith could be considered since he is a welterweight, the same division as Bancroft, and only one pugilist per division is permitted to represent the country.
However, all is not lost for Smith since he has been selected to be a part of another team scheduled to leave for Barbados March 7 next to compete in the Horace Phillips Memorial, one day after arriving on the Island; he will be fighting in the middleweight division. Two other countries, Barbados and the United States Virgin Islands, will also participate in that tournament and the GBA has named several other boxers to participate.
Those shortlisted for the Barbados tournament are Flyweight Youth, Michael April, Flyweight Elite, Delon Charles, lightweight, Clairmont Gibson and bantamweight, Diwani Lampkin. GBA executive, Kesa Chase manages that team, while Sebert Blake is the coach. GBA referee/judge, Richard Braithwaite will also travel with the team in an officiating capacity.
