On a day when 32 teams comprising 160 players battled for honours, two teams out of Fruta Conquerors, Pele FC and Western Tigers distinguished themselves in the U-14 and U-16 categories respectively, to advance to the finals when action in the Frank Watson Memorial Football championships got underway at the Tucville Ground Saturday evening last.
Football fans were treated to a full day of action as 16 matches were contested; 8 in the U-14 category and a similar number in the U-16.
In the end it boiled down to a face-off between Fruta Conquerors and Grove Hi Tec in the former category which Fruta Conquerors won 1-0 after Jeremy Garrett netted in the 26th minute. Western Tigers then clinched the honours in the other U-14 semi-finals match after defeating Den Amstel 3-2 on penalty kicks to set up the final encounter between those winners billed for Thursday February 27 next at the same venue.
The two U-16 semis finals ended in similar fashion; nil all in regulation time, and necessitated sudden death penalty kicks where Fruta Conquerors prevailed over GFC 3-2 while Pele defeated Renaissance 2-1. Those winners will now face off in the finals of the U-16 category to be played on the same day as the U-14 finals.
On that day also, an All Star U-14 team will clash with their U-16 counterparts from 16:00hrs and the winner receives a gift voucher to the tune of $5,000 along with uniforms and school supplies. The MVP in both categories will receive laptop computers while one player from each category will receive smart phones for the Golden Boot award.
The matches are being played in memory of Frank Watson, a former President of the Pele Football Club who died in a plane Crash in Kamarang in 1973. Two of the members of the organising group in New York, Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton and Ivor Carrington were on hand to witness the matches. Both individuals were impressed by the standard of play yesterday and said just so,
Meanwhile, each participating team will receive two footballs while there will be special prizes for the best defensive player, most valuable player, most prolific goal scorer and the best goalie while the winning team and runners up receive trophies and medals. The tournament is sponsored by the Pele (overseas) alumni, while former national coach, Lennox Arthur is the coordinator.
