A 23-year-old sand pit labourer was yesterday remanded for the murder of a 33-year-old female taxi driver whose nude body was reportedly found in a clump of bushes one mile from Jubilee Fun Park and Resort, Timehri, East Bank Demerara early Sunday morning.
Yesterday afternoon, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Sylvester Bristol also known as “Rambo” appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to be indicted for the capital offence.
The 23-year-old allegedly killed Savitri “Maya” Parma, some time between Saturday and Sunday last at Dakara Creek on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
The courtroom was filled to its capacity by the victim’s family members and friends.
Bristol was unrepresented by legal counsel. He was told that he would not be required to plead as the charge was indictable.
The Prosecution, which was being spearheaded by Inspector Michael Grant, stated that their investigation is ongoing and requested three weeks for its completion. Grant, however, did not reveal the details of the crime.
Previous reports, however, indicate that Parma, a mother of two who resided at Loncke’s Avenue, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was raped and strangled several hours before her body was discovered in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
She was said to have been murdered by Bristol whom she offered a lift to Loam Pit after picking him up at his work place on Saturday night.
While Parma’s body was reportedly found faced down with her head “pressed to the earth,” her son was found sleeping in the rear seat of her abandoned taxi hours later by her husband who decided to search for his “missing wife.”
Investigators who probed the case were led to Bristol who was reportedly found hiding in a wardrobe at his living quarters at Bashir Sandpit, Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
At the time of his arrest, he purportedly confessed to killing the woman after he was caught with Parma’s gold ring and cellular phone in his pocket.
The case has been adjourned to March 14.
