Over fourteen (14) representatives from various sports associations and organisations accepted the task to return to their respective institutions and help impart their new found knowledge on ‘Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED) and its Prevalence in Sports’, following a panel discussion facilitated by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) on Thursday evening, at the entity’s Headquarters on High Street, Kingston.
The discussion formed part of the GOA’s Annual Sports Administrators’ Course which commenced on Thursday and concludes tomorrow.
A five-man panel that included Sports Administrator Donald Sinclair, GOA officials Dr. Karen Pilgrim and Charles Corbin and media operatives Donald Duff (Stabroek News) and Rawle Welch (Kaieteur News), along with Course facilitator Garfield Wiltshire made brief presentations on the subject, before calling on the participants to offer their understanding of the issue.
Members of the panel spoke of the various types of PED, its uses, effects both good and bad and how prevalent is its use in the realm of sports.
Many of the respondents articulated very little knowledge of what drugs are prohibited according to the World Anti-Doping Agency,(WADA) Code as well as not being apprised of the danger of using PED.
With Guyana recently being brought into the spotlight as having an athlete who failed a drug test by WADA, the GOA, rightfully, sought the expertise of members of the panel in helping to spread the message across the sports spectrum.
Apart from Thursday night’s forum, the Course is also designed to improve the knowledge and competence of sports managers, leaders and sports administrators both within the Georgetown environ and those from the outlying areas.
Invitations were extended to National Sports Associations, The Guyana Teachers’ Union, Guyana Police Force, Guyana Defence Force, Prison and Fire Services and the National Sports Commission.
Meanwhile, the topics earmarked to be discussed are: Value and Ethics in Sports; Performance Enhancing Drugs and its Prevalence in Sports; Challenges Facing Sports in Developing Countries; Volunteerism; Importance of Sports Nutrition; Marketing and Public Relations and its Importance to Sports Associations; Women in Sport; Drugs and Doping in Sports; Combining Education and Sports; Sport and the Law; Budget and Money Management; Conducting Meetings; Sports for All; Preparing a Budget for a Sports Delegation; Governance of a Sports Organisation and HIV / AIDS and Protecting Youths in Sport.
Apart from Wiltshire, Corbin and Sinclair, among the other eminent presenters will be Noel Adonis, Wanda Richmond, Mayfield Taylor-Trim; Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento, Tricia Fiedtkou, Hector Edwards, Attorney-at-Law Emily Dodson, Ms. Roxanne George (Puisne Judge), Ivor O’Brien, Abigail Caleb, Claude Blackmore.
