Police and Prison authorities were up to late yesterday searching for an inmate who escaped from the Mazaruni Prison.
The prisoner, identified as Steve Benjamin, reportedly disappeared on Thursday while he was deployed to work in the compound.
Kaieteur News understands that Benjamin, who was incarcerated on a felonious wounding charge, was cutting firewood when he asked permission to have a bath.
After being granted permission, the inmate, who is on Amerindian ancestry, left the area and has not been seen since.
Inmates occasionally escape from the Mazaruni Prison but are often recaptured while traversing the rough terrain surrounding the penitentiary.
In 2102, prison authorities and Joint Services ranks launched a massive manhunt after prisoners Dean Hopkinson and Carlton Sampson escaped while playing a game of cricket with other inmates.
They were recaptured three days later near Sherima, Essequibo River, about 23 miles from the prison.
