Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools Football Tournament…
As activities in the Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools Football Tournament continue, several coaches will add their expertise to the success of the programme when the Guyana Sports and Development Foundation in collaboration with the Guyana Coaches Association commences the first of three coaching sessions, for teachers and coaches participating
in this year’s edition of the tournament.
Activities commence Monday February 10 next, at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue and continue Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 in New Amsterdam and Linden respectively. All sessions commence from 9:00 hours daily and will be facilitated by veteran coach Stanley Harmon.
The organizers said that the course is a comprehensive one that covers all aspects of coaching, team management, care and treatment of athletic injuries and sports psychology among other relevant topics and as in previous years will incorporate classroom and field activities. However, they have also indicated that field sessions will dominate this year’s activities since the course is scheduled for just one day. Participating teachers and coaches will be furnished with a handbook to be used as a refresher after the course is completed.
“The sessions will be used to provide broad based knowledge on the principles of the game and hopefully the participants will gain enough knowledge to properly instruct students, to ensure they perform creditably on the field,” the organizers said.
They believe that teachers and coaches should be role models for their students and as such, ought to display respect for the programme and their school. “In the final analysis the aim is to produce well rounded individuals that can be an asset to their families and the society.”
