Jamaican- based newcomer, Fly Jamaica, has embarked on major moves this year, as it teams up with local tourist and tourist-related organizations in a bid to sell Guyana as a major tourist destination. The airline has set its sights on this month’s Mashramani celebrations to kick- start the first set of activities for the year.
Teaming up with Head of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Harold Singh, the company recently held a special meeting to highlight plans for the country to boast its influx of tourists with a spat of cultural and national events.
Public Relations Officer, Nadine Hing told reporters that the airline is looking to go ‘all out’ in February since the company is not only ecstatic about the planned activities for Mashramani, but will also be celebrating its first anniversary, while its parent company, Wings Aviation, will be celebrating 30 years in business.
Hing said “We have teamed up with a number of designers and a band in promoting Guyana as a tourism destination for Mashramani.” Hing highlighted that the company has on board at least two costume bands, one coming out of New York so as to reach the various targeted groups.
Band member La Toya Whitehead of Team Elysium told reporters that the costume band is based in New York, but will be producing costumes for this year’s Mashramani. “We will produce costumes of vibrant, unique designs, with different sections to suit every taste.” She said that Elysium is derived from a Greek word that represents “a nice, seductive heaven.”
It was also noted that Brian Roberts of Honest Elusions has been passionate about promoting Guyana and local entertainment. Ms. Hing said that he produces a wide range of videos for local artistes as he specializes in videography. She said Roberts also works in collaboration with the Pan-Caribbean television channel, Tempo, which broadcasts the music and culture of the Caribbean.
She hinted that through this, Guyana would receive immense recognition as Fly Jamaica gears
for activities such as the “Best Chef of Guyana competition” which will be spearheaded by local chef John Rehman of Bettencourt’s restaurant. Rehman said that a number of chefs would be involved in the competition and would get an opportunity to be involved in the Jamaican Epicurean Festival.
The Epicurean Escape is a family event that showcases the best of Jamaica’s food, music and culture, while paying tribute to the international influences.
Premier chefs and culinary personalities, combined with several international celebrity chefs and chefs in training showcase their best creations. This year will feature several Jamaican chefs, renowned Caribbean and International chefs, as well as specially selected restaurateurs and top caterers.
Rehman said that local chefs will get an opportunity to showcase their work and bring awareness to Guyana’s culinary industry.
Hing related to reporters that the hope is to combine local minds to offer a number of events that would see tourists opting for Guyana as a vacation destination and get away. She said that the airline has viewed the need to market Guyana in a holistic way; hence the sought collaboration between the airline and local tourist organisers.
The Guyana Tourism Authority and Fly Jamaica’s executives have noted during their discussions, several hindrances to achieving their goals and had discussed measures that would aid in the development of the industry. Fly Jamaica’s Director Roxanne Reece noted however that the airline remains resolute in promoting Guyana as a top tourist destination. She said that the country has so much to offer and can easily rank among the top Caribbean locations.
