-Three more in custody
By Michael Jordan
A combination of patience and good detective work has apparently paid off, with police sources announcing last night that they believe that they have solved the murder of Pegasus Taxi Service driver Rudrinauth Jeeboo, who was bludgeoned and dumped in a heap of refuse in South Ruimveldt a month ago.
And they are linking the case to the murder of another taxi driver; 30-year-old Beterwagting, East Coast Demerara Raphael Campbell, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a clump of bushes at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, some six days after Jeeboo’s murder.
In custody last night was 21-year-old ex-policeman Shawn Edinboro, who, along with Sean Collins, 17, and Michael Bishop, 17, has already been charged with Campbell’s demise. Also in custody with Edinboro are two other suspects, who are said to be implicated in Jeeboo’s death.
Kaieteur News was told that investigators have a confession statement from one of the detained men, and police appeared optimistic that charges will be instituted soon.
Footage from security cameras at the Pegasus had shown a man and a woman entering Jeeboo’s car on Friday, December 27. His body was found the following day in Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt. A few hours later, police found Jeeboo’s recently-purchased car, minus its number plates and taxi logo, at the back of Guyhoc Gardens. No attempt was apparently made to strip the vehicle, and aside from a cell phone, nothing was apparently stolen from the slain man.
This had led to speculation that robbery was not the motive. However, detectives now believe that the victim was slain for his car. Jeeboo, 49, had worked with the Pegasus Taxi Service for about 20 years and his colleagues said that he was not in the habit of picking up strange passengers. It is unclear whether any of the suspects match the male passenger seen in the surveillance camera footage.
Sean Collins, of Ketley and Drysdale Streets, Charlestown, and Michael Bishop, of Hill Street, Albouystown, were remanded earlier this month for taxi driver Raphael Campbell’s murder.
Police allege that the youths murdered Campbell between January 2 and January3.
It is alleged that the youths stopped Campbell on Thursday, January 2, on Camp Street. Campbell reportedly took the passengers to the East Coast of Demerara, where he was slain.
According to police, on Friday, January 3, the accused were stopped at a roadblock on the Soesdyke/Linden highway while they were in a black Toyota Premio that was stolen from the murdered driver.
Bishop and Collins were apprehended, while Shawn Edinboro was detained a few days later.
