Could Alysa Xavier’s selection on the Pan Am Elite Hockey team which comprises some of the best players in the world tilt the scale in her favour for Sportswoman of the Year award.
Xavier, whose selection on the Elite list was recently recognised by Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, joined Argentine star and 7-time World Player of the Year Luciana Aymar on that exclusive register named by the FIH is a strong contender for the local award for outstanding female athlete of the year.
She, however, will have to contend with multiple-times winner Nicolette Fernandes, who apart from leading Guyana to the Overall CASA title where she also retained the women’s crown, has been making rapid strides up the world ranking and seems a formidable choice to gain the nod of the judges when they meet sometime shortly.
The two athletes are far and away the two leading contenders for the award and it is anticipated that despite Fernandes’ admirable comeback from her career threatening injury to string together some encouraging performances, Xavier’s selection on the Pan Am Elite squad is nothing short of astounding when it is considered that Guyana is now returning to hockey on the international stage and just like Fernandes has made an incredible leap up the rankings as well.
The Miami University of Ohio student’s reputation between the uprights is growing with some touting her as amongst the best in the Caribbean, a deserving recognition for all the hard work that she puts in.
Fernandes on the other hand has been the most consistent female athlete for a number of years and her work ethic and resolute commitment to reach the top is unquestionable hence her steady rise on the world circuit.
There is no doubt that members of the panel chosen by the National Sports Commission will have their work cut out, but whoever wins will be deserving of the accolade.
